Latches onto that, squared up

Ishant to Rahim, FOUR!! A little too short and Rahim latches onto that quickly, cutting it fiercely through backward point
Ishant to Rahim, FOUR!! edged but safe! It moved away from back of a length, Rahim was squared up before edging it between the slips and gully

Could you please explain to me what the emboldened parts means?

I know generally squared up means 'to prepare to fight" but I can't understand it here. And I guess "latched onto that" means "connected to the ball".

latch on to = catch, connect with, grasp (in some way). It can mean 'understand' metaphorically. square up = get ready, face squarely, align at a right angle
