Hi MrM,

September 9 can be either 'next Friday' or 'this coming Friday'?

Interesting but sounds strange. (next X , this Y X could mean the same)

Thanks for all the replies.

Interesting. In BrE, #1 would mean Sept. 2nd, and #2 would mean Sept. 9th.

Per MrM:

'Last Friday' and 'this Friday' can be the same --- September 2.

'This Friday' and 'next Friday' can be the same --- September 9.

Is that so? Sounds very confusing!

Can someone confirm?

Hello M2L

It seems that BrE ears differ from AmE ears on this question. AmE seems more flexible.

So no one's in a position to give a definitive answer...

Hi MrP,

MrP wrote, "Interesting. In BrE, #1 would mean Sept. 2nd, and #2 would mean Sept. 9th."

In BrE, do both 'this Friday' and 'next Friday' mean the same date, Sept. 9th?

How does that sound to you? To me, it's still very confusing if both 'this Friday' and 'next Friday' mean the same date.

Can you think of other examples which have 'this X' and 'next X' me

Say today were September 4 Sunday. I thought this question would be grammatical incorrect. Please correct me if i am wrong. I am supposing the question should have been "If today was Sept 4 Sunday " or Say today was Sept 4 Sund

"this Friday" and "next Friday"

To me, next Friday always means "the very next Friday", thus in the future. As to "this Friday", it may depend on the tense you use: "I went to London this Friday" is different from "I'm going to London this Friday", yet in both cases the meaning is clear (I think).

Now, today is Monday 5th (for me at least). If I say "last Friday", I mean Friday 2

Well, here's how it is for me:

Today is Monday 5th September.

"This Friday" is Sept. 9th.

"Next Friday" is Sept. 9th.

"Last Friday" is Sept. 2nd.

"This Friday just gone" is Sept. 2nd.

"A week on Friday" is Sept. 16th.

"Friday week" is Sept. 16th.

"I had some pizza on Friday" – Sept. 2nd.

"I'm planning to have some pi
