I know there is a 'firstly', so it would seem to make sense, but there isn't a word 'lastly'. It stays as 'last'. So, what is the difference between 'doing something last' and 'doing something at last'?

  • last - the final thing to be done.
  • at last - done after a delay or a long wait I will see the doctor last.

The word "lastly" does exist. It is an adverb used in the same way as "finally", "in closing", and "in conclusion".

Lastly, last of all, and finally are often used to end a set of points where time is not involved:
There are three reasons why I hate him: first /firstly he's rude, second/secondly he's a liar, and lastly/last of all/finally he owes me money. (NOT at last)

Oh yes I guess so, I think I just had one of those strange moments when a word just sounds wrong for no apparant reason!
