Last/latest

Hello,

If I used "last" instead of "latest" in the sentences below, would their meaning be unclear?

- His latest/last novel was actually quite good.

- They told us about their latest/last journey to Australia.

I know that "last" can also mean "the most recent", but it might give some people the idea that there will be no more novels, journeys, etc...

What do you think?

As you say, "last" can mean "most recent" or it can mean "final". If in your context you feel that there is risk of misunderstanding then say it another way, e.g. "latest" or "most recent".
