lasting

Researchers, in the paper on music and spatial task performance, reported that listening to as little as ten minutes of Mozart's music produced an elevation in brain power lasting ten to fifteen minutes, a finding that triggered much of the current interest in the positive effect of music on learning.

One book says the 'lasting' above refers to '(brain) power', but another says it refers to 'an elevation'. Which book do you think is correct?

Hi Taka

By coincidence, I have heard about this study. The clause equivalent lasting ten to fifteen minutes refers to an elevation in brain power. In the actual test, the students' IQ increased by a few points for a short time.

If the question is 'elevation' or 'brain power', I'd say 'elevation.' Brain power lasts until your 'brain dead.' Elevation lasts only as long as 'it's' elevated.
