Last Wednesday or this Wednesday???

Hi,

Suppose today is Saturaday and I want to talk about something that happened three days ago. Should I say "this Wednesday" or "last Wednesday" ??

This is a problem I often have with my students. I tell them that if the day, or month, is close to the present, the tense of the verb is enough to indicate what time we're talking about. We're in October now. If someone says "last September" it souinds very remote to me and suggests "September last year". As Clive says, "last Wednesday" doesn't mean 10 days ago, but it does sound strange when ta

But what if I really want to talk what happened ten days ago. Should I say:

"I saw her Wednesday last week/ last week on Wednesday."

I think either of your two convey your meaning, but "last week on Wednesday" seems more natural to my ears.

You could also say "the Wednesday before last."

Yes, And the same thing for future,

eg I'm going to see her (on the) Wednesday after next.

Interesting, for some reason, I refer to the Wednesday 3 days ago as this past Wednesday. When I say or hear last Wednesday I think of the Wednesday 10 days ago referring to last week. Don't know if that is a Massachusetts thing (it s been 25 years since growing up there,) or something peculiar to me.
