Last time or The last time

(1a) Last time I went there, I saw a rainbow.

(1b) The last time I went there, I saw a rainbow.

(2a) I saw a rainbow last time I went there.

(2b) I saw a rainbow the last time I went there.

My non-native English speaking friends and I have heard of these sentences either with or without the definite article.

Do you need the definite article? Thanks a lot.
