Last Sunday was .. ./ It was

Can I say,

(a) Last Sunday was John's birthday.

(b) Last Sunday it was John's birthday.

P/s: Can I say:

Last holiday / Last school holiday... ( which is correct?)

Top answer

(a) is correct. ] I might add "during", but the use of "holiday" is clearly British, so I'll let someone else answer.

(a) is correct. Only one subject is needed [as you wouldn't say, "John he's my friend".]

I might add "during", but the use of "holiday" is clearly British, so I'll let someone else answer.

How about (b) ? If I say, @Last holiday@, isnt incorrect?

Vincent Teo Last holiday / Last school holiday... ( which is correct?)
Give us a sentence, VT. Without context, I think both are wrong. You could say:

It happened during our last [school] holiday.

In the right circumstances, also: It happened during the last holiday.

But: He came to see me

both a and b- where the emphasis is A is that it was John's birthday recently (more specifically last sunday), and B last sunday was a special day- ie John's birthday

you cannot say 'last holiday' really- we generally talk about 'last summer/christmas/easter/half term/spring break' ect
neither do we really say 'last school holidays (if we do, it would probably be 'the last (school) h

Thanks. how about :

(b) Last Sunday it was John's birthday.

Do we accept it?

Last Sunday was John’s birthday –ok

Ii was John’s birthday last Sunday. Ok

But “Last Sunday it was John’s birthday” – is incorrect.

You do not need the [it] following Sunday.

i disagree- I think Last Sunday it was John's birthday sounds absolutely fine.
of the three, Last Sunday was John's birthday is the most infrequent
