Per BRITISH STYLE, are these okay as punctuated?

1) When she asked 'Why?', he said, 'I'm not sure.'

(Comma needed after single quote and question mark?)

2) When she screamed 'Stop!', everybody was startled. (Comma needed after single quote and exclamation point?)

3) When he said, 'Please ensure that you bring your tablets to the meeting,' everyone said that they would. (Comma INSIDE with this one?)

4) The questions 'Who?', 'What?', 'When?', 'Where?', 'How?' and 'Why?' need to be answered. (Commas correctly used throughout?)

5) I'm tired of her 'Where are you going?', 'How long will you be out?' and 'How much dud you drink' questions. (Correctly punctuated?)

Hi I would say that, in 1) the first comma helps the reader to break the sentence but the second is not doing anything. There is also a problem with using a single quote mark if the sentence contains an apostrophe. ' 3) Personally, I wouldn't put a comma at all (the remark isn't that interesting, so it just goes with the flow of the sentence) 4, 5) Yes, I like those.

  • Each piece of quoted speech looks good with a comma (and it is not usual to put one before "and") Dave

Hi

I would say that, in 1) the first comma helps the reader to break the sentence but the second is not doing anything. There is also a problem with using a single quote mark if the sentence contains an apostrophe. I like single quotes but one reason for using double quotes is that they separate from the apostrophe:

1) When she asked "Why?", he said "I'm not sure."
