"Last month" or "in the last month"?

"Have you been to mexico in the last year?"

When would one use "in the last ____" then simply "last ____"

Present perfect tense cannot use specific time points. (from past to now) So you use "in the last year" to have the stretch of time effect. (from 1 year ago to the present year) Use last year with simple past.
