Last but not least

I promise this is my last question. Here's my ending comment for the assignment. Please take a look at the last part of the sentence, is the grammatical? I'm not confident with that sort of sentence structure:

"Having said that, constructivist teaching is important because it allows students freedom to try new approaches to solve a problem. By doing so, they gain deeper understanding of the materials that they wouldn’t have with direct instructions."

It is clear enough that way I think.
