Last and latest

If I say:  This is his last book and  This is his latest book, referring to a writer.  Do both sentences mean the same?

Thanks in advance.

"latest book" means "most recent book". "last book" is ambiguous: it could mean the same, or it could mean the final book that he wrote (e.g. he is dead now, or he has stated that he will not write any more).

This is his last book.
Can mean he wrote it recently or he wrote it eg 30 years ago.
Can mean it is his final book (eg maybe he has died)).

This is his latest book.
