"lashes dark against her cheekbones"

Hi everyone

I was reading a novel and couldn't quite understand the sentence below.
"Her eyes were downcast, lashes dark against her cheek-
bones."

My guess is that the girl had long lashes which casted shadow on her cheeks. Is that right?

Top answer

No, it means that her long eyelashes themselves appeared dark against the background of her cheeks.
