Vocabulary

Larger than life and As If!

I have two questions.

1. What's larger than life mean? (He is larger than life.) Does it mean he is searching for important meaning in life in general? Does it mean he exaggerates things? Do you use this idiom often to describe some kind of a hero? (like Superman?)

2. What's the meaning of "as if"?

I heard this phrase from this movie called "Clueless." From watching the movie, I thought it might mean "no way." Did anyone watch it? And also, would people think that I'm rude if I say it? Do you guys sometimes use this phrase or hear someone using it?

Thanks.

Thank you for your reply Pieanne. But the thing is, even after I look for several dictionaries, I don't clearly understand the usage and connotation of them.

Does "larger than life" mean attractive and popular then? Do people use "as if" in everyday life? Cause I've never heard people using it outside of the movie. Could you help?

Thnaks again.

I think "as if!" is /and can be/ used in everyday language. It could be changed into "yes, in his/her/my dreams!" It means "as if I, we were going to believe that", "as if she, he, they were going to do that".

No, people who are "larger than life" are not always attracive (in the positive meaning) and popular. Imagine you're watching TV. Those persons "fill" the screen, they

Hmmm... I'm trying really hard to understand here but I'm not so sure if I do.

Can we use this term (larger than life) in real life and not referring to a movie character then?

He thinks he's larger than life. (meaning he thinks he is more important than other people.) Can we say President Bush is larger than life because he says important things and influence in many aspect of

"As if" is a saying that originated from the Vally Girl dialect that came out of southern California in the 1980's and 1990's. It's used the same way one would use the rhetorical questions "Are you kidding me?" and "You're kidding, right?" This is something that only young people use, though. If you're over 25 or so, you'll look really silly using it.

"Larger than life" can be used to de
