Larded with corruption

Hi

I just happened to read the word "lard" in a novel written by an Indian author. Is it common in English?
His whole career is larded with corruption.
Thanks,

Tom

Perhaps not so common anymore, because housewives don't use lard as often as they used to, but it is certainly still an active bit of vocabulary
