Laputa

How do you pronounce Laputa? (Gulliver's Travels / Japanese animated movie Castle in the Sky)

Top answer

The native English pronunciation would probably be "lap yoota" but the European would be "lap oota". In any case, it's a made-up word so the pronunciation is optional.

With the stress on "oo", I should add.

I would probably tend to say (to myself) La **** (Lah POO-tah), but not say that to anyone else. I would make it different on purpose, like Luh PUH duh, because **** in Spanish has to do with promiscuous women, as far as I know.

K, that's how I've said it. Luh-POO-tuh.

Like the Lakota Native American tribe.

Do you mean you pronounce it similarly to Lakota? Well, what can I say, I need to look up those words, lol, so MW just told me Lakota is Luh-coh-tuh... Anyway, I couldn't help thinking of "La ****" if I had to say "Laputa"... And that's not a good thing to

Well, I mean that iti's pu instead of ko, so it's poo instead of coh, but the luh... tuh on either end is the same.

One advantage of being a plump, middle-aged woman is that you rarely find people calling you a **** in any language.

Heh, not true! Here all the insulting terms of that kind are often used as general insults, so... you still run that risk, at least in Italy.

Hi Kooyeen,
Do you mean **** in Spanish is pronounced as POO-tuh? Just like you said, you would probably make it different on purpose, I am wondering if it is the reason why the British pronunciation mentioned by Martin, would probably be "lap yoota" (I understand it as rhyming with computer).
I suppose most Japanese are not aware of the association with the Spanish word when talking abou

Hi,
I just found that the upper case posted by Kooyeen can get through while the lower case posted by me was filtered out! Oh, I know, it is not an upper case / lower case issue. It's because Kooyeen is a moderator.
Anyway, I've already found a web site with the word spoken by native Spanish speakers. It's not that I am interested in the pronunciation of this swear word in particular, r
