Interesting point, Anonymous. If you pursue this view, first notice that we are then dealing with two different words, [s?m] and [s?m]:

I have some (s?m) apples. — plural indefinite article
Some (s?m) apples are McIntoshes. — quantifier

You'll also find that some (!) writers consider both the weak (s?m) and strong (s?m) forms of some to be determiners, in which class they also include any.
