Lakes or Oceans?

this is my comparison essay. I was hoping that someone would please comment on it for me and let me know if my punctuation and grammar were okay. Thank you.

I'm still trying to get writing down where I received my information. Is there anywhere in this essay that I would have to document my sources.

Lakes or Oceans

Growing up near Lake Michigan, I thought for a long time that I would favor a lake over an ocean. Swimming carefree; never worrying about sharks or jellyfish. To me, Lake Michigan was just like an ocean only better, or was it? What is the difference? I had never been to the ocean so honestly, I couldn‘t say that the lake was better than the ocean. When I was able to visit the ocean for the first time, I realized that each body of water is unique in its own way and both have a wide range of value to each individual.

Size is a great factor when determining the difference between a lake and an ocean. Oceans are vast bodies of salt water, while lakes are smaller bodies of water surrounded by land.

On ocean beaches, you might find sand dollars, starfish, and oyster shells. On lake beaches, you could find many smooth pebbles such as the Petoskey stone.

In most areas of the ocean, the waves are big and the water is cold, which makes it difficult for water-skiing, floating or swimming. Most lakes are reasonably temperate, so skiing, floating, and swimming are ideal.

Snorkeling is a great activity for the ocean. There are so many colorful fish, coral, and other marine life to observe. In lakes, you will see a sandy or seaweed bottom and some ordinary fish; if the water is not murky.

The type of boats on each body of water varies. Choosing an adequate boat is essential for the body of water you plan on navigating. You will almost never see a small aluminum fishing boat on the ocean or a luxury cruise liner on a lake.

Even though oceans and lakes have their differences, they are still bodies of water that are very important to the earth and its inhabitants. They each have exceptional qualities and it is nice to have the variety. As for me, I still prefer the lake.

I took some time to think about my essay and made some changes. I sure appreciate your insight. Sometimes I feel like a little out of my element.

We just had to pick two items to compare/contrast. Did I do a little better? Can you please check my punctuation. I'm not real clear on the uses of semi-colons.

I love the lake and all the activities that go with it. When I was able to visit the ocean for the first time, I realized that each body of water is unique in its own way and both have a wide range of value to each individual, even if one is preferred over the other.

Oceans are vast bodies of salt water. Water current is strong enough, that if you were to take a small air raft out to float on, you might not be able to paddle back to shore without some assistance from a passing boat or the Coast Guard., not to mention you have to be wary of sharks.

Lakes are smaller bodies of water surrounded by land. Currents are not an issue in most lakes and raft floating is a common and enjoyed activity.

On ocean beaches, you might find sand dollars, starfish, and oyster shells. The sand always seems dirty or littered with debris from the ocean tides and the sight and smell of rotting kelp is awful

On lake beaches, you could find many smooth pebbles such as the white gypsum, quartz, and Petoskey stones. The sand is great for making sand castles and there is always plenty of natural shade if someone has had enough of the sun but not the fun.

Snorkeling and scuba diving are great activities for the ocean. There are so many colorful fish, coral, and other marine life to observe. I have tried snorkeling and it is not as easy as it looks. My eyes burned each time when the salt water leaked into my mask, and I had to remember to blow the water out of my snorkel or I would inhale it.

In lakes, it would not be as much fun to snorkel or scuba dive. You will see a sandy or seaweed bottom and the water is often murky. A facemask is an option in a lake. People are able to swim with their eyes open. I remember when I was a child; I would swim to the bottom of the lake with my friends and watch them gather seaweed so they could scare the other children with it.

Water sports can be fun for anyone who has the courage to attempt them. The oceans large waves and coastal wind make surfing and parasailing enjoyable. Wake boarding and water skiing are popular on lakes due to light wind and calm water.

Although many people have their preferences on lakes and oceans, they should try them both. They may have their differences, but collectively they offer many activities, new experiences, and fun.

3. What you can or cannot do in oceans

4. What you can or cannot do in lakes

Use your own experience as examples, but they should be there only to support your ideas.
