Laid or layed

If you made a pattern with a bunch of stick on the ground, where they laid out or layed out?

laid out "Layed" may be a British spelling, but to the best of my knowledge, it's obsolete. I have it on my master word list, but it's not in my Am Htg dictionary. " I've seen it used for the thing they do to people in Hawaii, but I think that's a misspelling too.
