Lack - Count or Uncount?

These are dictionary examples.

Her only problem is lack of confidence.

Lack of sleep had made him irritable.

If he fails, it won't be for lack of effort.

But sometimes 'lack' is preceded by the article 'a'. Why's that?

One of the main problems is a lack of sleep. <-- Is this grammatical?

Thanks!
