"We all remember the problem when there was a/the lack of snow."
In this case, do I have to include the indefinite article or can I leave it out? Or should I use the definitie article?
What bemuses me is the fact that I've come across the noun "lack" many times, but sometimes, the indefinite article was used or simply left out. And I know it may depend on the context.
Thanks a lot.

Only the indefinite article sounds right to me.
