L.A. Times with/without THE

Hi,

"Los Angeles Times" is the name of a company, and so is "The New York Times." But I see Los Angeles Times with or without the, depending on context. What is the difference?

e.g:
The color Kindle edition of Los Angeles Times is now available.
The Los Angeles Times is a leading source of news on Southern California.

Thank you,
M
