My favorite team is the LA Sparks. Or
My favorite team are the LA Sparks.
I know it should be the first one but team usually equals more than one player so sometimes I´d feel like using are...
Can anyone give me some input on this.

Both are in use and common. It depends on the speaker's mindset. Singular 'team' would, I suppose, lead more to use the singular verb.
