may I omit 'in the knowledge that' from 'secure in the knowledge that'?

Of course, you would have to retain 'that', but it would not sound natural. 'Secure in the knowledge that/of' is a fixed phrase.

You could omit 'in the knowledge'. However, 'in the knowledge' indicates that White knew he was secure. If you omit that, we are not sure that White knew. eg Maybe the writer
