Knowledge

01. He has a good knowledge of French.02br
002. He has good knowledge of French.02br
00It is my understanding that the second sentence is incorrect.02br
00However, a person in the French forum told me the first sentence is incorrect and only the second sentence is correct. This was in a discussion about one of my questions in the French forum.02br
02br
00The person gave me the following explaination.02br
01font00What do you all think?02br
00------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------02br

00English we don't use the article before a number, or a word representing a number, used to count something.02br
02br
00"I have two dogs."02br
00"He has two cars."02br
00"I have no (or sometimes 'zero') knowledge of French."02br
02br
00When the number is part of a hyphenated phrase, we do use the article:02br
02br
00"I drive a five-speed car."02br
00"He's a two-timing so-and-so."0-

00To my mind only 01i00He has a good knowledge of English02i00 is correct. The use of the article is of course idiomatic as 01i00knowledge02i00 is not used in the plural. English is replete with similar expressions.02br
