Know,Knight,Knife?

When we pronounce such words their first alphabet is silent. There are many such words.What do we collectively call such words?

I would say they are silent k words. It is the first letter that is silent, by the way. I'm afraid you can't say 'the first alphabet' in that way

Thanks for your reply. Silent K is okay. But I'm looking for a word/classification that we can use to represent all such words. For example Know,Write,Wrap..

In that case, I would say 'silent first letter' or 'silent initial letter'

It's an interesting question how many letters can do this. Odd examples are: Czar, Djibouti and Pterodactyl

There are at least 2 reasons. First, that the initial letter in an Old English word was pronounced in the past, but not anymore (knee, knight, ...).
