Knowing

I was reading a review of Fleet Foxes' new album and this particular sentence caught my attention.

The arduous creative process took a toll on the group members, particularly singer/songwriter Robin Pecknold, who told Pitchfork at the time, "The last year has been a really trying creative process where I've not been knowing what to write or how to write."

I know that we usually don't use "know" in the progressive, however this structure is sometimes heard/said.

What do you think? Is this plain wrong or perhaps it's becoming more and more acceptable nowadays?

Thanks

Thanks, CJ. I suppose the explanation you gave is a reasonable one (and I can certainly relate to that).

Dimsum, if you're referring to the the in front of "last year", it simply means "the last 365 days" so there's nothing unusual about it (and that's why he used "has been" and not "was").

Hi Dimsum,

I'm positive that "the last year" in the quoted paragraph means "the last 365 days". Of course, feel free to ask for a second opinion. The only thing peculiar to me in that quote was the use of the progressive knowing.

All I can say is, the whole passage is odd, let alone being correct.

My main issue with the use of "the" in the passage was, when we make a reference about "last year", we don't normally use a definite article. The fact that it was there made it sound strange to my ear.

" Last year was the most profitable one ever.." No article is needed.
