Vocabulary

know someone

Which response is natural to you, B1 to B4? I'd like to learn if the phrase "know someone" means "know someone personally". Plus the phrase " know of someone".

A) I know Lionel Messi, the famous soccer player.
B1) Really? Where did you meet him?
B2) Of course, everyone knows him!

C) I know of Lionel Messi, the famous soccer player.
B1) Really? Where did you meet him?
B2) Of course, everyone knows of him!

Thank you.

B1 is the expected—because of the fact in B2. If the person is not famous, then B2 is the more likely response.
