Grammar

Know + clause starting with 'what'

Hi

I'd like to know if the below is grammatical. (If not, could you correct it?)

A. I don't know what people see in him is so exciting that they have to root for him

Other than grammatical justification, could you comment on this next sentence as to whether it is more natural in comparison to the above?

B. I don't know what it is about him that makes people so excited that they have to root for him.

Thank you.

Hi BillJ
Thanks for answering my question
Just to make sure,

I don't know that what people see in him is so exciting that they have to root for him
How about if I put 'that' here? Is this still ungrammatical?
Thanks

You can make it grammatical by adding 'that', as shown.

Thank you CalifJim!
I can see why your version is grammatical. Thanks.
One last question, though, I promise!

E. I don't know about what people see in him that is so exciting that they have to root for him
If you must use about as is placed in that position above, how can

Please note that just because a sentence is grammatical doesn't mean that it is a good sentence or a sentence that anyone in his right mind would actually say.

The ones that strike me as grammatical are B, C, and E.
Those that are not grammatical are A and D.

... know about what ... is a very awkward combination.

They are all terrible, terrible, awful,
