Hi,

(b) They went to the park with their bicycles. John bumped into a stone, so he fell off. He promised his father that he will cycle slowly in future.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi,

'Would' is better. It expresses the idea of 'future in the past', eg Thirty years ago he promised his father that he would . . . It's reported speech, really.

Compare Five minutes ago he promised his farther that he will . . . which does not refer to 'future in the past'.

Best wishes, Clive
