Knit versus Weave

Hi.

I want to know how knitting is different from weaving?

I know that weaving is mostly done by loom and knitting by knitting needles. But when we are talking about weaving by hand, how can it be different from knitting.

Thanks for your time and help

In weaving, there is a matrix of orthoganal threads a) the warp is the set of lengthwise threads that are fixed (usually on a frame or loom) and (b) the weft is the thread that is woven over-and-under the warp. In knitting, there are two threads that are intertwined with each other in stitches, using pairs of knitting needles. A foundational stitch pattern is knit-and-purl.

Basic knitting actually uses only one thread.

If something is said to be hand-woven, it doesn't mean no loom was used -- it just means it was made by an individual, not in a factory on huge machines.

Of course you are right - it has been a long time since I was making knitted sweaters!
