I got the knife off of him before he ran away.

I understood the sentence soemthing like this, "I have managed to get knife forcefully from him before he ran away".

Hi,

I got the knife off of him before he ran away.

This seems sub-standard to me. I'd say I got the knife off him before he ran away.

In an exam or an interview for a good job, I would advise you not to use 'off of'.

Best wishes, Clive
