Knew vs. know

Hello. I was in a recent conversation with a fellow co-worker. I tried to explain to him that I know the sister of our new co-worker by saying the following:

"I knew her sister a long time ago. We went to college together." I am now second guessing myself and am wondering if I had said "I know her sister from a long time ago. We went to college together."

I would think that the second one is correct since I still currently know her. Anyways, I am grateful for finding this forum to gather feedback as I am trying to improve my English. Thank you.
