Kitchen scale

Hi,

This is a mechanical kitchen scale. Could you tell me what you would call the red plastic thing and the red line next to the arrow that are both circled?

I think that the red thing is used to set the scale back to zero. When I put butter or something I want to weigh on top of it, I pick the amount I want to get to (45g) and the red line has to point exactly at the centre of the arrow.

I’m not sure how to describe it.

Thank you.

Red line = balance indicator When the arrow points to the line, the scale is balanced. Red Slider = some kind of control. It is probably a counterbalancing slider (which you slide and adjust to read the weight of the object on the scale.

  • When it is set at zero, there is nothing on the scale, and the scale is balanced.

It appears to be a single beam scale. The line/arrow on the right is a calibration dial/tare weight set. Use it to set the scale to zero by aligning the line with the pointer for accuracy. Tare weight is needed when you weigh items that require a vessel to contain them, such as powders, granuals, etc. You would put the empty vessel on the scale and dial the indicator to align the arrow and line.
