Kirshenbaum vs. SAMPA vs. Unicode

Greetings.
Is there a particular preference on alt.usage.english, sci.lang, and other language-related newsgroups for the Kirshenbaum or SAMPA transcriptions of the IPA? Should I stick to one or the other when posting messages, or are most regulars fluent in both? Or does anyone prefer a direct IPA rendering using Unicode and some suitable character encoding, such as UTF-8?
Regards,
Tristan

[nq:1]I don't know from sci.lang, but in AUE (including any crossposted posting thereto) you should use only erkIPA. SAMPA is not well-known in AUE. Also, crossposting is bad.[/nq]
Yes, it's very, very bad ever to imagine that two groups of people might possibly have interest in the same comments or questions.

Kirshenbaum is the de facto standard on sci.lang (which is where I am) and the best known, but use whatever gets the job done. Also, you should seriously consider not cross-posting to the two groups: they tend to no

My understanding is that some newsreaders don't speak UTF-8. At least I got a lot of flak when I used it here one time.
