Convertible is a kind of car
Hatchback is a kind of car

Q. What are hatchback and convertible? A. Kinds
Q. Of what are they kinds? A. Car (not cars) - We are referring to more than one kind of the same single thing.

Therefore we can say that hatchback and convertible are kinds of car.

A common mistake is to say that hatchback and convertible are kinds of cars.
