Crime is a serious problem in most of the societies. To tackle this, many people believe that long prison sentences should be given while many think that there are many alternatives.

One group of people opines that a long prison term has many advantages. When offenders are in jail for a considerable amount of time, it gives them chances to rehabilitee as they have enough time to introspect their wrongdoing . Moreover, it also act as an deterrent for someone who is thinking of committing further crime.

However, some believe that serving a long prison time has disadvantages as it gives offenders an opporturnities to mix with other criminals and could conspirate to commit more serious crimes. So, instead of that old system punishnment, community service is a good option. Here, it gives offenders an opporturnities to give something positive to society and could also improve their characters. Additionally, government should also look for ways to minimize crime.

When we analyze deeply, thought prison system have been in existence since an ancient time , crime rates are still high today which clearly shows that this system is not that highly effective. So, one good idea is to mix between the two. For a heinous crime like murder and rape, long jail sentence should be given and for a less serious crime, alternative punishment should be given. In this way, society would expect to be more peaceful.
