Today many people prefer to take a gap of one year before pursuing higher education. While obtaining financial capability and considerable time in thinking are the two primary advantages, its disadvantages should also be considered.

Many students opt to a year off after finishing their school so that they can accumulate fees and think thoroughly about their desired career. Many of them begin to do part-time jobs since they want to bear their own educational expenses that is the main benefit of taking a gap year. In 2016, more than 50% students of the Cambridge University, for example, worked part-time in call centers before commencing their college life, according to a survey. Apart from becoming financially independent, students get time to think in which field they want to proceed further when they take a year off. For instance, many female students opted arts in the Stanford College in 2018 even though they initially decided to pursue career in commerce.

Lack of interest to continue higher education and peer pressure are the two main drawbacks for students who take a gap year before taking admission in university. Most people do not continue their education when they take a year off; they believe that they can earn money and live their lives comfortably without completing their higher education. Take Canada as an example. Most A-level students end up with blue-collar jobs because they do not continue their higher education. What is the reason? They believe that they can live happily without obtaining a degree. Another drawback is peer pressure which students feel when their classmates do not take any gap year and take admissions in their desired colleges. Thus, they feel stressed and suffer from depression.

In conclusion, although there are many benefits of taking a year off after finishing school, many students lack motivation to continue their education and suffer from peer pressure.
