Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make? Has this become a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Today with the presence of technology, the way of communication has changed significantly. Many relationships have been affected from this, and I consider this a negative development.
The availability of computers and internet have enabled people to make new friends in any part of the world. That is to say that they make new relations by using various social media websites, such as Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter and without having face-to-face communication. In past years, people used to make new relationships by having in-person meetings. Most alumni of the Oxford University, for example, contact each other on its online forum and seek career and personal advice rather than meeting in-person. This evidence supports that technology helps people to build new relationships.
Although it has become easier to contact and make new friends with the help of technological devices, I do not think it is a positive development. The reason is the boding in the relationships is not strong which comes when people meet and see the body language of each other. In other words, face-to-face communication enables people to build trust and a strong bonding in the relations. Despite living in the same house, most spouses, for instance, talk to each other on smartphones through text messages or social websites in Australia. This has increased the number of divorce cases recently. If they had talked in-person of spent time with each other, their relationship would not have deteriorated.
In conclusion, new friends can easily be made with the availability of the latest technology, but the bonding among the relations is deteriorating.
