Many high street shops have gone out of business in recent years. Why do you think this has happened? Is it a positive or negative development?

Shopping trends have changed considerably in the recent past. People do not prefer to buy things from main-street shops and numerous of them have shut their businesses. In my opinion, it is due to rising online shopping, and I believe it is a welcome development.

Internet-based shopping is becoming increasingly popular these days, which has caused traditional shopkeepers to close down their businesses. This is because buying things on internet is effortless as many things, such as groceries and clothing can be bought with a click of a button on computers. When people go to shops physically, they find it hectic since they visit many of them in order to compare prices and quality. Thus, they opt to e-commerce websites that has resulted in significant decrease in traditional shopping. Around one thousand retail outlets, for example, wound up their business in the UK after incurring a substantial loss in 2016, according to a survey.

Buying things online is a positive development, in my view, since people save time. What is the cost of traditional shopping? Time is the main cost which people waste when they opt to shopping physically. That is to say that people take their cars, stuck in traffic and find parking difficult if they decide to visit shops. This also results in frequent traffic jams on some high streets. Many families, for instance, go out on weekends in Melbourne for shopping and entertainment that not only increases the traffic on main roads, but also the strain on public parking spaces. On the other hand, in internet-based shopping people receive their order at home without going outside.

In conclusion, usage of e-commerce has resulted in substantial decline in traditional shopping. I take the view that it is a positive effect as people save considerable time when they buy things online.
