Hi, Your question has something to do with the history of the English language. The word house falls under a group of irregular nouns that used to be pluralized by adding -n or -en , deriving from an old-fashioned form in Old English. Old English is a West Germanic language that was spoken and written by the Anglo-Saxons between the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century.

  • I guess you are familiar with the word oxen , which is the plural form of ox , so I assume you might be surprised to find out that theoretically house can be pluralized in a similar way: housen .
  • Nowadays, however, the plural form housen is regarded as being dialectic, and it is rare to hear native speakers of English use it rather than houses .
