Why did you choose C?
You need to know the reason you choose your answer. You can do it by eliminating the wrong ones, or picking the correct one.

Hi,
I used "C" as this is used for past tense like "were".

But "were" in this sentence is not past tense. It is the subjunctive mood which is used in posing a hypothetical idea.

Answer D is wrong because the auxiliary verb have takes a past participle (invested). The answer is C because would takes a plain form (invest). The modals will and can, though, aren’t possible in remote conditionals.
