Letter of Motivation



I am a Masters student in the physics department of ( ). During the course of my postgraduate study I have developed a keen interest in nanophotonics and wish to pursue a Ph.D. in the same field.



During my undergraduate study the phenomena of light-matter interaction first caught my attention. My introduction to optoelectronic devices and optical fibers made me want to delve deeper into their study. My ambition to involve myself in active research in this field grew stronger during the tenure of my lectureship. After securing a position among top 1% successful candidates in (entrance exam), I decided to opt for the ‘Applied Optics’ programme for my postgraduate study at ( ).



The world class education along with the interaction with eminent professors helped me to strengthen my knowledge in the diverse field of Optics. Courses like Semiconductor optoelectronics, Application of Holography, Laser systems and applications, Optical Electronics helped me to gain in depth knowledge in the respective fields. The flexible course study at ( ) also allowed me to expand my knowledge in my desired field of research.



My encounter with Prof. X had been the major motivating factor for me to choose my future research career in nanophotonics. A constant interection with Prof. X helped me to explore different branches of nanophotonics, such as near-field microscopy, photonic crystal structures, metamaterials etc. I have also opted for the course ‘Negative Refraction Metamaterials’ as an independent study under his supervision. My rigorous study and regular discussions with him about the physics, fabrication and application of metamaterial structures showed me a complete different perspective of electromagnetism and the light-matter interaction. I am also privileged to work under Prof. X on my one year M.Tech. project titled ‘Fabrication of Photonic Crystal Structures Using Holographic Lithography’. My objective in this project includes fabrication and characterization of photonic crystal structures using Holographic Lithography. My interest in this project also includes studying the anomalous dispersion as well as negative refraction present in the photonic crystal structures.



After attaining substantial knowledge in the field of nanophotonics, now I feel the need for an association with a research group completely dedicated to these fields. But discovering and choosing a research group that fulfils all my needs was a rigorous and delicate task. After visiting your website and referring to your group’s publications, I am convinced that _____________ is the ideal place for me to carry out my research activities.
