Tourism today creates a variety of problems, such as pollution due to flights, traffic congestion and water pollution. Do you think that governments should impose extra taxes on flights or accommodation to restrict today’s tourism industry?

Give reasons for your answer.

Nowadays, Tourism is a major industry in many countries. But, unfortunately, this sector contributes a lot of environmental problems such as water pollution, traffic congestion, and plastic pollution. For this reason, many concerns believe that imposing a high tax on flights and accommodation would alleviate the problems, however, I opine that it is not a good idea.

To support my idea, first, tourism employs thousands of workers. So think about what would happen to those if this industry is closed? The dire consequence would be a high unemployment rate which would give rise to a significant increase in criminal activities such as stealing. Also, for many countries like Maldives, Singapore, and Indonesia, a large portion of their economies is dependent on such sector. So, when tourists stop visiting, those countries' financial state would be adversely affected. Moreover, tourism makes locals more knowledgeable as by daily interacting with foreigners, the native people learn how to go along with people of various races and nationalities and get exposure to different cultures and traditions.

With regard to the environmental problem, the local authorities should implement various measures. First, to control the plastic problem, recycling boxes should be installed in every strategic place and tourists should be made aware of using such. By this way, a difference in cleanliness could be seen. Also, Bus service exclusively for tourists should be installed to reduce the number of taxis. This would decrease air pollution as well as traffic congestion. Furthermore, priority should be given to undergoing scientific research for more eco-friendly vehicles. For example, as an electric car emits no pollution, the government should invest more in such type of production as well as gives financial assistance to private industries manufacturing eco-friendly cars.

In conclusion, imposing high on tourism section is not a good measure as it would affect the local economy.
