Majors in sophomore year or first year.

Everybody has a dream to become something in their lives. People know what career they want to choose since childhood. So why waste time, I’d prefer universities that will allow me to choose my major in the first year itself.
It is a saying that time is of the essence. We have only got one life why not make full use of it and achieve our goals. If you decide what profession you’d choose beforehand you save so much time to study only the specific subject and go deep into it. For example, I had already decided to go for chemical engineer even before entering the college. So I chose chemical engineer as my major in the first year. Chemical Engineering is a vast field and to be a specialist in this discipline you have to give enough time to study the fundamentals. Therefore, we should know of our aim and career path beforehand.
However, some may argue that deciding majors in the sophomore year, which is the second year of college, will widen your knowledge regarding other subjects too. This is true but what they fail to see is that knowledge we grab isn’t going to help us in the field we finally choose. Let me give you another example, if I had given myself another year to decide between metallurgical engineering and chemical engineering and then later I opted chemical engineering then the knowledge of metallurgical isn’t going to help me because both are very different fields.
Finally I’d say there are many advantages of choosing your major in first year itself. This is practiced in India and I find it quite convincing. Choose you career path if you haven’t already and go out there and grab it.
