FACING THE ORDEALS OF TOMORROW

This coming April 11, 2012, 640 graduating students of Mariners’ Polytechnic Colleges Foundation –Legazpi City will march down the aisle with pride and honor. After the hardships for almost 4 years in college, finally they will have their diplomas and awards as results of their sacrifices. Moreover, I would like to put emphasis on the veracity that sacrifices and hardships do not end there, it’s actually the beginning. Even though at times we may not think so, our life as graduate students will end.
The chaotic part
After graduation, we will find jobs related to our courses or bachelors’ degree. Unfortunately, in today’s age and even in the past, finding a job is never been easy. We all know that a degree is worth something and we are all aware of the hard work we’ve put in it, but the sad thing is employers don’t. Employers don’t know the number of nights you stayed up studying, the word count for your best academic paper or the exams you aced. The only thing our future employer wants to know is whether we can do the best possible job based on the experience we have standing behind us. At this time, it’s really difficult to recognize one’s potential with the online-only application process. Therefore, taking everything we’ve got and putting it into gaining a background chock-full of knowledge will only help us. It sounds like common sense, but so often we lose track of why we’re really in college in the midst of partying, social lives, boyfriends/girlfriend, and piles of unnecessary homework.
The realization part
We might regret for some things that we’ve done during our college years, but the optimistic response will always be there. Though it may be hard for us to find a job since we are fresh graduates, but we must not lose our hopes to be successful ones. Let us be positive. We should think that we are armed with an education and energy- two tools that will help us chart our new course, whether it is a career, graduate studies or volunteering. Remind ourselves that we are well equipped to persevere and overcome any obstacles that we face. Another thing is to stay connected. The support system we built while at school doesn’t disappear the moment we leave campus. Keeping in touch with friends, professors and mentors is easier now than ever before, and their guidance will help us navigate the sometimes confusing post-college world. Moreover, Part of graduating from college and entering the “real world” is engaging in a process of self-discovery. Look for ways to enhance our existing interests as well as create new ones. Taking opportunities to further our knowledge about a particular subject, meeting people who have similar interests and becoming involved in the community will help expand our horizons and open doors to our future. Let us not waste our time by gibberish stuff, get busy! If our goal is to have a job, take decisive steps to reach that goal, such as refining our resume, sending out applications and talking to people in our network about what we’re looking for. The more action we take, the closer we will be to reaching our goals. We should also be resilient, while in the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, it is an important skill to learn when facing the ups and downs of life after college. Don’t let rejection letters from companies or graduate programs get you down. Everything is a learning process, so try to look at each “no thank you” as an opportunity to improve.

The conclusion part
The things mentioned in the realization part will greatly help us face the ordeals of tomorrow. We should be confident to face the real world and instill in our mind the principle of our late commodore Dante jimenez Sr. “I’m not afraid of a storm, for I know how to sail my ship” With that, facing the ordeals of tomorrow will be as easy as ABC.
