I've not heard of kilometre being shortened to just 'k' but it might be used in some versions of English I suppose.

Hi guys,

The word kilometre is commonly shortened to k when talking of running distances, eg I ran 10k this moning.

Another variation, which I believe may have originated with the US military in Vietnam, is to speak of 20 clicks.

Best wishes, Clive

K is often used to represent the number 1000, without necessarily referring to grams, metres etc.
Another point on abbreviations: as we're abbreviating in any case, is it essential to put the "s" for the plural? I personally write 10 kg, not 10 kgs.

Indeed. It's used to indicate a multiple.
