I'm not familiar with the 'grass' culture, but I think you're right.

I like the adjective killer, used to describe anything that is very good. e.g. That is a killer hat! I really like it!

I don't think "killer" means "very good" here:  the sentence isn't emphatic enough.  I think "killer grass" just means "marijuana," not "really good marijuana."

On the other hand, since you can also call marijuana just "grass," if you smoked some and said to your friend, "This is some killer grass, man!" -- that would be the usage Old Man Gordon is talking about.
