In film we watched a movie called Renaissance Man. The film follows about a man, Bill Rago. Bill lost his job and had to sign up for unemployment. Bill manages to get a job through unemployment. This new job is the very different from his old job as an advertising person. His new job was to teach at an army base, Fort McClane. This was obviously a job that Bill did not see coming, but he will remember this job forever.
Bill is a very relevant person. He is divorced, he had recently lost his job, and he is tying to have a good relationship with his daughter. Bill is loosing everything he thought he had at once. Bill's outlook gives us an accepting thought of what it's like to get through the tough times of life.
The new job that Bill gets is at an Army base called Fort McClane. He is assigned to teach English to a few besieged soldiers for six weeks. They are also known as the "Double D's". In the beginning, Bill is unhappy with this new job because he has never had to teach anyone before. After meeting the soldiers, Bill is surprised at the circumstances he got himself into.
On the first day of class, the soldiers came into the classroom while in their marching formation. After they say their names, Private Myers, Private Montgomery, Private Benitez, Private Leroy, Private Hobbs, Private Melvin, Private Haywood, and Private Davis Jr., Bill has the chance to introduce himself to them. He tells them that he never had any former experience with the army and that he was just fired from his other job. He told them that he is not a certified teacher. Once the soldiers learned this, they start doing whatever they feel like. Then, Bill discovered the freedom in their eyes was different from what he was trying to teach them because now it was harder for him to reach out to them.
Bill asks the students to perform a writing assignment for class. They are to write about why they joined the army. The assignment gave Bill the chance to learn more about these young soldiers.
Bill finds out that Private Myers joined as an escape from her family issues. Private Leroy was going to become a big football player, until he got hurt and then decided to join the army. Private Davis Jr. joined because his dad fought and was killed in the Vietnam War and he wanted to be like his father and make him proud. Bill began to understand that the soldiers were going through hard times in their lives, just like he was.
During the course of the class, the soldiers start to respect Bill a lot more. They were learning new and different things tan the army was teaching them. Once they discover Shakespeare's Hamlet, they are very fascinated by it. Bill helped them understand the Old English and they started to read it.
Bill was very happy for the student he taught once they graduated from basic training. He and his daughter both watched the soldiers march by. They were especially happy when his students marched.
The Drill Sergeant gave Pvt. Davis Jr. a medal that his father should have received. Pvt. Davis Jr. was very excited. Bill felt so happy for him.
I think you need to know that the Drill Sergeants will never tolerate tardiness or leaving early to anything. If they are late, the Sergeants will be very unhappy with the soldiers and they will make them get down and do push-ups. That's was you see happen a little earlier in the film. Bill wanted to help the boys to he said something to the Drill Sergeant but the Sergeant was very angry and thought that Bill had embarrassed him during his time with the soldiers. They obviously take tardiness very seriously in the army and do not appreciate it if you are someone who shows up late. They will respect the other soldiers more who show up on time or even early.
