When I read your title it made me think of a bandleader setting the tempo for the first of a set of three or four songs, OR "The band kicked off the set with Jerimiah Was a Bull Frog." (started it off)

Now I'm quite sure you're simply missing a word - "kicked her off the set." The word "backstage" gives it away. "Nobody is allowed on the set!" "The set" is
